Immigration

Immigration has played a significant role in shaping past US growth. Since 1965, immigrants and their descendants have been responsible for an estimated 55 percent of total US population growth. As a result, the foreign-born share of the US population has increased rapidly, from a historically low 5 percent in the 1970 Census to an estimated 14 percent today. When their US-born children are included, immigrants and their families account for roughly 28 percent of the current US population.

Without these past immigrants, the US would almost certainly be an economically weaker, less globally-competitive country.
